Kenneth "Babyface"
Edmunds
Known for his romantic lyrics and unforgettably smooth
tunes, pop/R&B songwriter/producer Babyface is one of the most talented
and successful individuals in the music business today; he is also one
of the hardest working. In addition to maintaining a successful solo career,
he has written and produced hundreds of hit songs for other artists, including
the 1992 Boyz II Men song "End of the Road," which became one
of the biggest-selling singles of all time.
Babyface was born Kenneth Edmonds in Indianapolis on April 10, 1959, one
of six boys in a large musical family. He began his professional music
career as a teenager, performing in Bootsy Collins' backup band, where
he earned his now-famous nickname. After a stint in the late '70s band
Manchild, Babyface joined the funk group the Deele, which released three
albums during the 1980s. After the group broke up, Babyface began a solo
career, releasing his 1987 debut, Lovers, on Solar Records. Collaborating
with former Deele drummer Antonio "L.A." Reid, Babyface began
writing songs for other artists. Together the pair wrote No. 1 R&B
hits for vocalists such as Bobby Brown ("Every Little Step"),
Whitney Houston ("I'm Your Baby Tonight") and TLC ("Baby
Baby Baby"). In 1989, the duo formed their own label, LaFace Records,
in Atlanta, securing distribution from Arista. The nascent R&B label
pumped out hit after hit, breaking TLC and Toni Braxton among others,
and selling tens of millions of albums.
After winning a Grammy for Producer of the Year in 1992 the pair slowly
grew apart, but Babyface continued writing and performing. He has written
hits for artists such as Boyz II Men, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Bel Biv
DeVoe, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Tevin Campbell and many others, and has
also released several successful solo albums, including 1989's Tender
Lover, 1993's For the Cool in You and 1996's The Day. In September 1997
Babyface appeared on MTV's "Unplugged" show, and a resulting
album, Face MTV Unplugged, was released later that year.
To date, Babyface has accumulated 10 Grammy awards; nine for producing/songwriting
and one performance award for his 1995 hit "When Can I See You."
In 2000, Epic released the best-of compilation A Collection of His Greatest
Hits, marking the end of his tenure with the label; he had elected to
move to Arista, where L.A. Reid was now a high-ranking executive. In 2001,
Babyface released a new album, Face2Face, and also produced the punk-pop
soundtrack for the film Josie & the Pussycats. The back-to-basics
Grown & Sexy came in July 2005. ~ Steve Huey, All Music Guide
