Bruce Springsteen
Bruce Springsteen was born on September 23, 1949, in New Jersey. By singing
about working class life and American heartache and touring endlessly,
Bruce has become one of the most respected and successful musicians in
the world.
In 1984, Bruce released his best-selling LP, Born In The U.S.A., which
eventually sold over 15 million copies in the U.S. and is the 7th best-selling
LP in U.S. history. The LP spawned 7 Top 10 hits including his Number
1 hit, "Dancing In The Dark." Born In The U.S.A. was also named
the 6th Best Album of the 80s by Rolling Stone. In 1984, Bruce also won
a Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance for "Dancing
In The Dark." In 1985, Bruce's videos were awarded at the MTV Video
Music Awards for Best Male Video ("I'm On Fire") and Best Stage
Performance In A Video ("Dancing In The Dark"). In 1994, Bruce
recorded a song for Philadelphia about a gay man dying of AIDS: "Streets
Of Philadelphia." The song was a Top 10 hit and won Bruce an Academy
Award and gave the AIDS fight a lyrical voice on the radio. "Streets
Of Philadelphia" also won Bruce 4 Grammy Awards in 1995: Best Male
Rock Vocal Performance, Best Rock Song, Best Song Written Specifically
For A Motion Picture or For Television, and Song Of The Year. The video
for the song also won an MTV Video Music Award in 1994 for Best Video
From a Film. Bruce released his Greatest Hits in 1995 with a few new tracks
with the E Street Band including "Secret Garden" and "Murder
Incorporated" The album was an immediate best-seller. Springsteen
followed it with The Ghost of Tom Joad (November 1995), another low-key,
downcast, near-acoustic effort and embarked upon a brief solo tour. In
1999, shortly after his induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame,
Springsteen reunited with the E Street Band and embarked on a world tour
that lasted until mid-2000, its final dates resulting in the album Live
in New York City.
He then made his first new full-length studio album to feature the group
as a whole since Born in the U.S.A., The Rising, his first album of new
studio recordings since The Ghost of Tom Joad. Released in July 2002,
it was followed by another successful tour and recording sessions for
a new album, released as Devils & Dust in 2005. One year later he
released the first covers album of his career, a tribute to the songs
of Pete Seeger titled We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Sessions. Live in
Dublin, featuring concert tracks done on the tour supporting the Seeger
project, was released on both CD and DVD in 2007. Then it was back to
working with the E Street Band for the release of Magic in the fall of
2007. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide.
