Def Leppard

Def Leppard was formed by high school buddies Joe Elliott and Rick Savage in 1977. They were later joined by Steve Clark on guitar and Rick Allen on the drums. In early 1980 the band released their first album, On Through The Night. Later that year Def Leppard arrived in America to open for many different bands including Judas Priest and AC/DC. In 1981 the band then teamed up with producer “Mutt” Lang to record their second album High ‘n’ Dry. Later that year, MTV discovered the video for "Bringing On The Heartbreak" and put it into their heavy rotation schedule. This helped the band sell a lot more records of High ‘n’ Dry.
Phil Collen joined the band in 1982 for the recording of Pyromania. The single, Photograph, was released and gobbled up by the US fans for a total of 7 million copies. Unfortunately, the album didn’t do as well in the rest of the world. In 1984 disaster struck the band. On New Years Eve, Rick Allen lost control of his car and severed his left arm. The doctors are unable to re-attach it. Rick, determined not to stop playing re-worked a Simmons electronic drum kit so he could play it one-handed.
In 1987 Def Leppard released its biggest selling album ever, Hysteria. The album sold 16 million copies and seven of the twelve tracks were released as singles. They band was finally big stars in their own country.
In 1991 guitarist Steve Clark died from a mix of prescribed painkillers and alcohol. He was later replaced by Vivian Campbell, Ronnie James Dio’s former guitarist. In 1993, Def Leppard released the rarities collection Retro Active, featuring a new single, "Miss You in a Heartbeat." Two years later, the group released the greatest-hits collection Vault while preparing their sixth album. Slang arrived in the spring of 1996. The two-disc Rock of Ages: The Definitive Collection arrived in 2005, followed in 2006 by Yeah!, a collection of covers. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
