Great Big Sea

BIOGRAPHy

Great Big Sea has its roots in St. John’s rowdy pubs, where co-founders Sean McCann and Bob Hallett met while playing Newfoundland folk songs for boisterous crowds made up of hard-partying university students and off-duty fishermen. In 1993, after meeting fellow socio-holic and pub stalwart Alan Doyle, they started Great Big Sea in an attempt to create a new approach to Newfoundland folk music, one that combined their original music with the traditional sounds and instruments they had grown up with. In 2002, drummer Kris MacFarlane joined the band, and a year later, bass player Murray Foster came aboard. While music fashions come and go, Great Big Sea has continued to build audiences across the continent. A hard working approach to touring and performance along with a genuine love for the music they perform has kept the band growing, despite being pretty much immune to musical fashions. Numerous side projects, from Doyle’s acting and soundtrack work to McCann’s solo projects to Hallett’s writing keep them busy when they aren’t touring with the band. While some groups might bristle at these distractions, for Great Big Sea, it is just fuel to the fire that drives their artistry.

Career Path

1993Co-founders Sean McCann, Bob Hallett, and Alan Doyle formed Great Big Sea in St. John's, blending original songwriting with Newfoundland folk instruments to create a sound unlike any band on the national circuit.
1995Released second album 'Up,' expanding the band's reach across the Canadian touring circuit and building the festival reputation that would sustain them for two decades.
1997'Ordinary Day,' from the album 'Play,' became a landmark Canadian hit, later so embedded in national identity it was used (without permission) in the 2000 federal election campaign.
2002Drummer Kris MacFarlane joined the lineup, solidifying the classic four-piece formation that would record 'Sea of No Cares' and drive the band's peak touring years.
2005Released 'The Hard and the Easy,' a deep dive into traditional sea shanties that showcased the band's folk scholarship alongside their rock-pub energy.
2010Released 'Safe Upon the Shore,' their final studio album with the full lineup, then toured worldwide behind it, with bassist Murray Foster, who had joined in 2003, anchoring the rhythm section.
2012Marked their 20th anniversary with the compilation 'XX' and launched a 38-show North American tour across 28 cities, playing material from nearly every prior record.
2013Sean McCann announced his departure from the band at the conclusion of the XX Tour, closing the chapter on the original lineup after two decades.
2021Alan Doyle released JUNO-nominated solo album 'Back to the Harbour,' keeping the Great Big Sea songbook alive through his touring band and drawing the band's core fanbase to sold-out Canadian dates.
2022Doyle released live album 'Here, Tonight,' capturing the communal energy of his full-band shows and serving as the closest document to the Great Big Sea live experience available to new fans.
