He deserves a prolonged standing ovation. Jay Leno is one of America’s true icons of comedy, having been the host of NBC’s The Tonight Show with Jay Leno from 1992 to 2009. Beginning in September 2009, Leno started a prime time talk show, titled The Jay Leno Show, which aired weeknights on NBC. Leno returned to host The Tonight Show with Jay Leno on March 1, 2010. Leno hosted his last episode of The Tonight Show on February 6, 2014. That same year, he was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame. Prior to becoming host of “The Tonight Show,” Leno had been the exclusive guest host of “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” from 1987 to 1992. Jay Leno first appeared as a guest on the show March 2, 1977. Most recently, Leno hosts CNBC’s Jay Leno’s Garage. Jay still loves to perform around the country. He does as many as 300 comedy shows around the United States a year. He’s a Hall of Famer, first ballot, no doubt about it.

Career Path

1977Made his first guest appearance on 'The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson', planting the seed for a relationship with the franchise that would define his career.
1987Named exclusive guest host of 'The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson', a role he held for five years before inheriting the desk.
1992Took over as permanent host of NBC's 'The Tonight Show with Jay Leno' from Johnny Carson, anchoring the franchise for more than two decades.
1996Released the comedic memoir 'Leading With My Chin' on Dove Audio, broadening his public profile beyond late-night television.
2009Launched 'The Jay Leno Show' as a prime-time weeknight series on NBC, one of network television's most watched prime-time experiments of the era.
2014Hosted his final episode of 'The Tonight Show with Jay Leno' on NBC and was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame that same year.
2015Began hosting 'Jay Leno's Garage' on CNBC, a seven-season automotive series that ran 88 episodes while he simultaneously performed up to 300 stand-up comedy shows per year across the United States.
2022Survived a garage fire that caused serious burns to his face, hands, and chest after a fuel line on a vintage 1907 White Motor Co. steam car ignited, sharing his recovery in an exclusive interview on NBC's TODAY.
2023CNBC canceled 'Jay Leno's Garage' after seven seasons and 88 episodes, closing his 30-year run at NBCUniversal; he continued producing the series independently for his YouTube channel.
2025Resumed his coast-to-coast stand-up schedule with a comedy residency at The Comedy and Magic Club in Hermosa Beach, California, alongside special appearances with fellow comedy legend Arsenio Hall.
