BIOGRAPHy

Far and away the longest lasting and the most successful of the ’70s progressive rock groups, Yes proves to be one of the lingering success stories from that musical genre. The band, founded in 1968, overcame a generational shift in its audience and the departure of its most visible members at key points in its history to reach the end of the century as the definitive progressive rock band. Their audience remains huge because they’ve always attracted younger listeners drawn to their mix of daunting virtuosity, cosmic (often mystical) lyrics, complex musical textures, and the powerful yet delicate lead vocals of Jon Anderson. In the 1970s, Yes reached their creative peak and produced what many critics consider their finest works: The Yes Album, Fragile (both in 1971), Close to the Edge (1972), Tales from Topographic Oceans (1973), Relayer (1974) and Going for the One (1977). The 80’s were big for them as well with 90125 (1983), which spawned the US number one smash “Owner of a Lonely Heart” and Big Generator (1987). Nine of their twenty studio albums have reached the top ten in either the UK or the US charts, with two reaching the number one spot in the UK. They have sold 13.5 million certified units in the US. Yes released Heaven & Earth in 2014, and they continue to tour the globe.
