Pure Prairie League

BIOGRAPHy

Formed in 1971, Pure Prairie League comprised Craig Lee Fuller (vocals, guitar), George Powell (vocals, guitar), John Call (pedal steel guitar), Jim Lanham (bass) and Jim Caughlin (drums). Their self-titled debut album included the excellent “Tears,” “You’re Between Me” and “It’s All On Me.” The work also featured some novel sleeve artwork, using Norman Rockwell’s portrait of an ageing cowboy as a symbol of the Old West. For successive albums, the cowboy would be portrayed being ejected from a saloon, stranded in a desert and struggling with a pair of boots. The image effectively gave Pure Prairie League a brand name, but by the time of Bustin Out, Fuller and Powell were left to run the group using session musicians. This album proved to be one of the best and most underrated records produced in country rock. A single from the album, “Amie,” was a US hit. The group achieved a surprise US Top 10 hit in 1980 with “Let Me Love You Tonight.” In 2005, Pure Prairie League released All in Good Time. They continue to tour the world.

Career Path

1971Founded in Cincinnati by Craig Lee Fuller (vocals, guitar), George Powell (vocals, guitar), John Call (pedal steel guitar), Jim Lanham (bass), and Jim Caughlin (drums), with their self-titled debut album introducing originals 'Tears,' 'You're Between Me,' and 'It's All On Me,' packaged with Norman Rockwell's portrait of an ageing cowboy, a sleeve image that would brand successive albums as a country-rock saga.
1972Released 'Bustin' Out', widely regarded as one of the finest and most underrated country-rock albums of its era, featuring the original recording of 'Amie' and establishing the band's signature blend of acoustic warmth and rock energy.
1975'Amie,' re-issued as a single, climbed the Billboard Hot 100 and peaked at No. 27, giving Pure Prairie League their first significant national chart moment just as a bluegrass revival was sweeping Midwestern college campuses.
1976Released the albums 'Dance' and 'If the Shoe Fits' in the same year, expanding the band's catalogue and refining their country-rock sound across two distinct studio statements.
1980Scored a surprise US Top 10 hit with 'Let Me Love You Tonight,' featuring a young Vince Gill on lead vocals, the song peaked at No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent three weeks at No. 1 on the Adult Contemporary chart, the band's commercial peak.
2005Released 'All in Good Time,' their first studio album in years, reaffirming the band's presence on the touring and recording circuit under founding members' stewardship.
2021Rebuilt their touring lineup with new members Jared Camic (vocals, bass) and Jeff Zona (vocals, guitar) after longtime bassist Mike Reilly retired from the road due to health issues, positioning the band for a return to active touring.
2024Released 'Back on Track', their first studio album in nearly two decades, via Pure Prairie League Records, featuring 12 tracks blending country, rock, and blues written by Zona, Camic, and longtime collaborator Gary Burr, produced by ex-member Michael Reilly.
2024Launched active national touring behind 'Back on Track,' including a headlining slot at the Needham Bank Great Hall Concert Series, with steel guitarist John Heinrich (formerly of Ronnie Milsap's band) joining the lineup after founding member John David Call retired from the road.
