BIOGRAPHy

You better work! RuPaul first became widely known in the 1990s when he appeared in a wide variety of television programs, films, and musical albums. Previously, he was a fixture on the Atlanta and New York City club scenes during the 1980s and early ’90s. RuPaul has on occasion performed as a man in a number of roles, usually billed as RuPaul Charles. RuPaul is noted among famous drag queens for his indifference towards the gender-specific pronouns used to address him—both “he” and “she” have been deemed acceptable. “You can call me he. You can call me she. You can call me Regis and Kathie Lee; I don’t care! Just as long as you call me.” Of course, RuPaul is well known for his/her hit song, “Supermodel.” RuPaul released Butch Queen in 2016. RuPaul continues to tour the world with her/his unique style. RuPaul is lots of fun!

Career Path

1993Broke into mainstream visibility with the dance-pop anthem 'Supermodel (You Better Work)', establishing him as a leading voice in drag culture.
2009Created and launched 'RuPaul's Drag Race' on Logo TV, building the reality competition format that would grow into a global franchise spanning multiple international versions.
2016Published 'Butch Queen', adding the book to a body of work that spans music, television, and writing, while continuing to tour internationally with his live show.
2018Received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, recognizing decades of contributions to entertainment as performer, host, and producer.
2021'RuPaul's Drag Race' won the Emmy for Outstanding Reality-Competition Program for the fourth consecutive year, tying the record for most consecutive wins in the category.
2024Season 16 of 'RuPaul's Drag Race' premiered to the highest-rated franchise debut in six years, with Nymphia Wind crowned winner, while the series secured its fifth Emmy win for Outstanding Reality-Competition Program.
2024Published memoir 'The House of Hidden Meanings' via HarperCollins, covering his childhood in San Diego, the Atlanta and New York club scenes, and his path to sobriety, it became a number-one bestseller on Amazon.
2025Season 17 of 'RuPaul's Drag Race' aired with Onya Nurve winning the $200,000 prize, while the franchise earned 10 Emmy nominations, the most of any reality series that year.
2025Broke the all-time Emmy record with his 10th consecutive nomination for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program, the most nominations any host has received in that category.
