Sean Kingston

BIOGRAPHy

Young rapper Sean Kingston’s history helps describe his sound. Born in Miami, Florida, then raised in Kingston, Jamaica, from the age of six, he mixed more than a little dance hall and reggae into his hip-hop. The hard lyrics come from a hard life, which included incarceration, homelessness, and growing up a lot faster than he should have. He landed a breaking-and-entering charge at age 11. He endured twenty-one days in jail, boot camp and living in a car while his mother was incarcerated. None of it swayed the youth against hustling; it just pointed him in a different, more lucrative direction. Taking his ability to write rhymes and hooks, he started working Miami’s talent show and showcase circuit. Producer Jonathan “J.R.” Rotem caught his demo and signed the young rapper to his record label right before the major-label bidding wars began. The Sony imprint Epic won and introduced their new artist in spring 2007 with the single “Colors 2007.” Kingston was only 16 years old when the track landed. With his second single, “Beautiful Girls,” he took a sample of Ben E. King’s “Stand by Me” and twisted it into a huge hit. This more polished, smoother, and less hardcore stance suited the singer and figured heavily into his self-titled debut full-length. Sean has since returned to the top ten with catchy hits like “Me Love,” “Fire Burning” and “Take You There.” Sean is expected to release an album in the very near future, perhaps by the end of 2016. Sean continues to tour the world.

Career Path

2007Signed to Epic/Sony at 16 after producer J.R. Rotem caught his demo on the Miami showcase circuit; debut single 'Colors 2007' introduced him to the market that spring.
2007'Beautiful Girls', built on a Ben E. King 'Stand by Me' sample, hit No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped charts in the UK, Australia, Canada, and Ireland, making Kingston the first artist born in the 1990s to lead the Hot 100.
2008Followed his debut with the singles 'Take You There' and 'Me Love,' both top-10 entries that extended his streak as reggae-inflected pop's newest hitmaker.
2009Released sophomore album 'Tomorrow' alongside the top-5 Billboard Hot 100 hit 'Fire Burning,' confirming his crossover reach beyond the reggae and dancehall roots laid in Kingston, Jamaica.
2010Duetted with Justin Bieber on 'Eenie Meenie,' a top-20 Billboard Hot 100 hit that broadened his audience to Bieber's pop fanbase as both artists rode the same early streaming wave.
2011Released 'King of Kingz' and survived a serious jet ski accident in Miami Beach, returning to recording and touring after a months-long physical recovery.
2013Delivered 'Back 2 Life,' his third studio album, anchored by the singles 'Beat It' and 'Wake Up in It,' reestablishing his dancehall-pop hybrid for a new label cycle.
2022'Road to Deliverance,' Kingston's fourth studio album released on his own imprint, leaned deeper into reggae and dancehall while revisiting the Miami-meets-Kingston sound of his origin story.
2024Arrested after a SWAT raid at his Southwest Ranches, Florida residence on wire fraud charges; a federal jury later convicted him of conspiracy and four counts of wire fraud tied to a scheme involving over $1 million in luxury merchandise.
2025Sentenced to 42 months in federal prison by a Southern District of Florida judge for his role in the fraud scheme, closing this chapter of his post-peak career in the courts.
