Jim Carrey is best known for his manic, slapstick performances in comedy films such as Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, Dumb and Dumber, The Mask, Liar Liar, Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events, and Bruce Almighty. Carrey has also achieved critical success in dramatic roles in films such as The Truman Show, The Majestic, Man on the Moon, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and Simon Birch. Will Ferrell called Jim Carrey the funniest man in comedy. Jim Carrey is a rubber-faced comedian in the Jerry Lewis mold. His work on the sketch comedy show In Living Color (1990-94) made him a cult comedy figure; his starring role in the surprise hit Ace Ventura, Pet Detective (1994) made him a star. Carrey’s crowd-pleasing style mixed juvenile slapstick with manic improvisation; by the late 1990’s he became one of Hollywood’s most popular (and best-paid) stars. Later films included Dumb and Dumber (1994), The Cable Guy (1996, with Matthew Broderick), and The Truman Show (1998, with Ed Harris). He played comedian Andy Kaufman in the 1999 movie Man on the Moon, and in 2000 wore green makeup for a film based on the Dr. Seuss classic How The Grinch Stole Christmas. Career Path

1990Joined the Fox sketch series 'In Living Color' as a featured player, building a cult following through four seasons of elastic physical comedy and character work.
1994Broke through as a box-office force with three back-to-back hits, 'Ace Ventura: Pet Detective', 'The Mask', and 'Dumb and Dumber', redefining Hollywood physical comedy.
1996Stretched into darker territory with the cult black comedy 'The Cable Guy' alongside Matthew Broderick, pushing against his crowd-pleasing image.
1998Won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama for 'The Truman Show' opposite Ed Harris, his first major awards recognition for dramatic work.
1999Won a second consecutive Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy, playing comedian Andy Kaufman in Milos Forman's 'Man on the Moon'.
2000Disappeared under green prosthetics to play the title villain in 'How the Grinch Stole Christmas', the Dr. Seuss adaptation that became one of the year's top box-office performers.
2004Starred opposite Kate Winslet in Michel Gondry's 'Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind', earning some of the strongest critical notices of his career.
2020Returned to blockbuster comedy as Dr. Ivo Robotnik in 'Sonic the Hedgehog', a role that reignited his commercial appeal with family audiences.
2022Reprised Dr. Robotnik in 'Sonic the Hedgehog 2', then announced plans to step back from acting, citing a desire to pursue life outside Hollywood.
2024Came out of retirement to reprise Dr. Robotnik in 'Sonic the Hedgehog 3', also playing Gerald Robotnik with custom prosthetics he helped design, in the Paramount sequel released to positive reviews.
