BIOGRAPHy

String Theory is a collaborative ensemble of musicians and dancers that utilize invented instruments and sonic sculpture to create their unique performance landscape and sonic footprint. The ensemble was founded by instrument designer/builder and composer, Luke Rothschild; choreographer/director, Holly Rothschild; and cellist, composer, Joseph Harvey. String Theory consistently delivers stunning and unique entertainment to the top people in the events industry. String Theory transforms architecture into musical instruments and then “plays” the building. This new concept in performance always fits beautifully when the client has a flare for the unusual and guests who enjoy only the most cutting edge work at their event or party. Opulent golden musical brass wires envelope the guests in a canopy of sound and attach to existing structure. Choreographed dancers Harpists mesmerize onlookers with kinetic performance as they play the long-strings, generating captivating tones and textures. Either interior or outside to the facades of buildings up to 1000 feet high, String Theory installations and performances garner the highest praise from all who witness.

 

Career Path

2002Founded by instrument designer and composer Luke Rothschild, choreographer Holly Rothschild, and cellist Joseph Harvey as a genre-bending ensemble fusing invented instruments, sonic sculpture, dance, and large-scale harp installations.
2006Performed at the Sundance Film Festival, establishing the ensemble's reputation with major entertainment industry clients including HBO, Showtime, and Warner Music Group.
2010Luke Rothschild selected as a Sundance Institute Composer's Lab Fellow, underscoring the ensemble's dual identity as both live performance act and serious compositional force.
2013Mounted a large-scale String Theory installation at The Getty Museum and MOCA, transforming building facades into playable instruments with choreographed dancers performing on opulent golden brass wires.
2014Performed at the Emmy Awards and the Grammy Awards, bringing the ensemble's architectural-instrument concept to Hollywood's premier industry events.
2016Returned to The Ford Amphitheatre and The Broad Stage in Los Angeles for new productions, expanding the ensemble's catalog of site-specific performances for outdoor and intimate indoor venues.
2018Commissioned by Walt Disney Imagineering and Qualcomm for custom large-scale installations, applying String Theory's concept of playing architecture as a musical instrument to corporate and experiential events.
2021Created an original opera at a historic pirate's house in Gothenburg, Sweden for the Fringe Festival, enveloping the audience in golden long-string harps attached to the building's existing structure.
2024Performed immersive long-string harp and dance installations at premiere private and corporate events, with exterior installations reaching up to 1,000 feet high on building facades for clients demanding cutting-edge entertainment.
