BIOGRAPHy

Through a combination of zealous righteousness and post-punk experimentalism, U2 became one of the most popular rock bands in the world. The Edge provided the group with a signature sound by creating sweeping sonic landscapes with his heavily processed, echoed guitars. Though the Edge’s style wasn’t conventional, the rhythm section of Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr. played the songs as driving hard rock, giving the band a forceful, powerful edge that was designed for arena rock. And their lead singer, Bono, was a frontman who had a knack of grand gestures that played better in arenas than small clubs. It’s no accident that footage of Bono parading with a white flag with “Sunday Bloody Sunday” blaring in the background became the defining moment of U2’s early career — there rarely was a band that believed so deeply in rock’s potential for revolution as U2, and there rarely was a band that didn’t care if they appeared foolish in the process. By 1987, the band’s following had grown large enough to propel them to the level of international superstars with the release of The Joshua Tree. Unlike many of their contemporaries, U2 were able to sustain their popularity by reinventing themselves as a postmodern, self-consciously ironic dance-inflected pop/rock act, owing equally to the experimentalism of late-’70s Bowie and ’90s electronic dance and techno. By performing such a successful reinvention, the band confirmed its status as one of the most popular bands in rock history, in addition to earning additional critical respect.

Career Path

1980Debut album "Boy" introduced the band's signature sound: the Edge's reverb-drenched guitar layered over the driving rhythm section of Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr., with Bono's arena-ready vocals up front.
1983"War" became U2's first gold album in the US, reaching No. 12 on the Billboard chart; "Sunday Bloody Sunday," performed live with Bono carrying a white flag, became the defining image of the band's early idealism.
1987"The Joshua Tree" propelled U2 to international superstardom, reaching No. 1 in over 20 countries, selling 25 million copies, and winning the Grammy Awards for Album of the Year and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group.
1991Launched the Zoo TV Tour behind "Achtung Baby," a multimedia spectacle of suspended cars, dozens of television screens, and live satellite feeds that redefined what a rock arena show could be; "Achtung Baby" later won the Grammy for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group.
1991Opened the MSG Sphere in Las Vegas with the residency "U2:UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere," performing "Achtung Baby" in full for the first time on an immersive 160,000-square-foot LED screen, with Bram van den Berg filling in on drums for the recovering Larry Mullen Jr.
2000"All That You Can't Leave Behind" sold over 12 million copies and earned seven Grammy Awards; lead single "Beautiful Day" won Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group.
2017Released "Songs of Experience," the companion to "Songs of Innocence," debuting at No. 1 in the US; the album was completed during the Joshua Tree 30th-anniversary world tour.
2023"Songs of Surrender", 40 reimagined recordings of U2 classics including "One," "With Or Without You," and "Sunday Bloody Sunday," produced and curated by the Edge, received widespread critical praise.
2024Concluded the Sphere residency after extending the run to more than 40 shows, setting a new standard for concert spectacle and grossing tens of millions of dollars in Las Vegas.
