Jason Isbell

BIOGRAPHy

Grammy winner Jason Isbell with his band The 400 Unit’s new album, The Nashville Sound, is a beautiful piece of American music-making, but watch yourself: it will light a fire under your ass. “You’re still breathing, it’s not too late,” Jason sings. As with Isbell’s 2013 breakthrough, Southeastern, and his double-Grammy-winning follow up, 2015’s Something More Than Free, The Nashville Sound was produced by Dave Cobb. Isbell says that he and Cobb created a simple litmus test for the decisions they made in the two weeks they spent at RCA Studios : they only made sonic moves that their heroes from back in the day could’ve made, but simply never did. It’s a shrewd approach—an honest way to keep the wiz-bang of modern recording technology at arms length, while also leaving the old bag of retro rock ’n’ roll tricks un-rummaged. Lyrically, The Nashville Sound is timely. Musically, it is timeless. Don’t miss the chance to see him live, where he always plays his heart out.

Career Path

2003Joined Drive-By Truckers as a guitarist and songwriter, contributing 'Outfit' and the title track to the album 'Decoration Day,' his first nationally distributed recordings.
2007Left Drive-By Truckers and issued his solo debut 'Sirens of the Ditch' on New West Records, establishing an independent Americana voice outside the band.
2009Formed Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, assembling the backing band that would become his primary creative vehicle for studio albums and live performances.
2013'Southeastern' debuted at No. 23 on the Billboard 200, won Song of the Year at the Americana Music Honors and Awards for 'Cover Me Up,' and later appeared on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time.
2015Dropped 'Something More Than Free,' produced by Dave Cobb at RCA Studios, which won two Grammy Awards including Best Americana Album at the 58th Grammy Awards.
2017Put out 'The Nashville Sound,' produced by Dave Cobb at RCA Studios, with Isbell and Cobb using their heroes' sonic vocabulary as the sole decision-making filter throughout the recording.
2023Unveiled 'Weathervanes' on Southeastern Records with the 400 Unit, winning Grammy Awards for Best Americana Album and Best American Roots Song for 'Cast Iron Skillet' at the 66th Grammy Awards.
2025Debuted 'Foxes in the Snow,' a solo acoustic album recorded in five days at Electric Lady Studios on a 1940 Martin guitar, earning three 68th Grammy nominations: Best Folk Album, Best American Roots Song for the title track, and Best American Roots Performance for 'Crimson and Clay.'
2025Reunited with Drive-By Truckers on 'The Late Show with Stephen Colbert' in December, performing 'Hell No, I Ain't Happy' in their first announced joint appearance in nearly 20 years, tied to the remastered reissue of 'Decoration Day.'
2026Headlined Radio City Music Hall for two consecutive nights in February, performing a solo set with Shelby Lynne on February 20 and returning with the 400 Unit alongside Alejandro Escovedo on February 21.
