Linda Ronstadt

BIOGRAPHy

Linda Ronstadt has established one of the most impressive careers in the history of contemporary music. As one of the more beloved singers of our generation, she has broadened the latitudes of the pop singer, expanding the vocalist’s canvas to include country, rock n’ roll, big band, jazz, opera, Broadway, Mexican and Afro-Cuban influences, leaving no stone unturned in the pursuit of the ultimate song. She has had worldwide album sales of more than 50 million, and countless gold, platinum, and Grammy award winning records to her credit. Linda Ronstadt began her pop career in 1967 with the Stone Poneys. With 30 albums under her belt, and countless sold out tours across the globe, she has snagged ten Grammys along the way, releasing classic albums such as Heart Like A Wheel, Hasten Down The Wind and several other critically acclaimed forays into waters not usually chartered by a pop star of her magnitude. Her stylistic ventures into Mexican music, Big Band classics, and pop standards solidified her reputation as one of America’s premier songsmiths. We find her constantly challenging herself as she interprets material from some of rock’s most profound songwriters. “When I choose a song,” she says. “I have to feel it could be about me or about my experiences, or someone close to me.” Linda Ronstadt continues to tour the world.

Career Path

1967Launched her pop career with the Stone Poneys, establishing early footing in the Los Angeles folk-rock scene that would grow into one of the most genre-spanning careers in contemporary music.
1974'Heart Like a Wheel' produced the No. 1 hit 'You're No Good' and earned Ronstadt her first Grammy, positioning her as the dominant female voice in California rock.
1977Published 'Simple Dreams', her memoir tracing a career that stretched from Stone Poneys folk-rock through Mexican mariachi, opera, and Broadway standards.
1983Recorded 'What's New' with conductor Nelson Riddle and the Nelson Riddle Orchestra, launching a three-album standards trilogy that proved her voice could hold its own against the Great American Songbook.
1987'Canciones de Mi Padre', her first mariachi album, won the Grammy Award for Best Mexican/Mexican-American Album and became the biggest-selling non-English-language album in American record history at 2.5 million U.S. copies sold.
2011Retired from singing after a Parkinson's disease diagnosis ended her ability to perform, closing a career that had accumulated ten Grammy Awards, more than 50 million worldwide album sales, and countless sold-out tours.
2014Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the class of 2014, with Stevie Nicks among the performers who paid tribute at the Barclays Center ceremony.
2016Received the Recording Academy's Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award at a tribute concert at the Dolby Theatre, one of seven honorees recognized by the Recording Academy that year.
2019Named a Kennedy Center Honoree at the 42nd annual ceremony, with Carrie Underwood performing 'Blue Bayou' and 'When Will I Be Loved' in her tribute.
2022The Tucson Music Hall at the Tucson Convention Center was officially renamed The Linda Ronstadt Music Hall during the International Mariachi Conference, honoring her connection to both the city and the genre.
2024An authorized biopic starring Selena Gomez and directed by David O. Russell was greenlit, with Ronstadt's longtime manager John Boylan and James Keach producing the feature.
