Matchbox Twenty

BIOGRAPHy

matchbox twenty
American pop-rock band Matchbox Twenty formed in Orlando, Florida, in 1995. The quartet consists of lead vocalist and primary songwriter Rob Thomas, lead guitarist Kyle Cook, bassist Brian Yale, and drummer/rhythm guitarist Paul Doucette.
The group catapulted to international stardom with their 1996 debut album, Yourself or Someone Like You, which achieved a rare Diamond certification in the United States. This explosive mainstream entry was fueled by a string of iconic, angst-ridden radio hits including “Push,” “3 A.M.,” “Real World,” and “Back 2 Good”. They sustained their chart dominance through the early 2000s with the multi-platinum albums Mad Season(2000)—featuring their first Billboard Hot 100 number-one single, “Bent”—and More Than You Think You Are(2002), which produced the smash hit “Unwell”. Following periodic hiatuses that allowed Rob Thomas to launch a highly successful solo career, the band continuously reunites for their dedicated fanbase. They earned their first Billboard 200 number-one album with North in 2012. After returning with their fifth studio album, Where the Light Goes, they surprised fans by releasing The North B-Sides. They remain highly active on the road, adding fresh dates to their tour calendar alongside festival headlining spots like Oceans Calling. Moving forward, the band is actively gearing up to celebrate the massive 30th anniversary of their debut album. Known for their tight live musicianship and hook-heavy sound, Matchbox Twenty has sold over 39 million records worldwide.

Career Path

1996Broke out of Orlando with 'Yourself or Someone Like You' on Atlantic Records, a debut that would eventually go Diamond in the United States, one of the rarest RIAA certifications, and multi-platinum in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand.
1996Marked the 30th anniversary of 'Yourself or Someone Like You' with new streaming releases including 'The North (B-Sides) EP' and announced plans for a landmark anniversary event, with Rob Thomas citing a potential Broadway residency as part of the celebration.
1997'Push' crossed from rock radio to pop radio and lodged itself in the Billboard Hot 100's top five, turning a regional club band into an international act inside twelve months of their debut.
2000'Mad Season' debuted in the top three on the Billboard 200 and went quadruple platinum in the US; the single 'Bent' reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, their first chart-topper and confirmation the debut was no fluke.
2003'Unwell,' from 'More Than You Think You Are,' spent 16 weeks at No. 1 on the Adult Top 40 and crossed into mainstream pop consciousness, the band's most-streamed catalog track and a set-list staple ever since.
2007Returned from hiatus with the compilation 'Exile on Mainstream,' certified gold in the US, featuring new single 'How Far We've Come', a reunion that answered whether the audience had moved on.
2012'North' opened at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, thirteen years after their debut and their first album chart-topper, making them one of the few rock bands to open at No. 1 across three separate decades.
2023Released 'Where the Light Goes' on Atlantic Records, their first studio album in eleven years, and launched the 'Slow Dream Tour' across more than 50 North American dates with Matt Nathanson and Ben Rector as special guests.
