Andrew McMahon

BIOGRAPHy

Andrew McMahon

Andrew McMahon is best known for his influential role in the indie-pop and alternative rock scenes. Born  in Columbus, Ohio, he first rose to prominence as the frontman of the pop-punk band Something Corporate, releasing hits like “If You C Jordan”. In 2004, McMahon shifted toward a more personal sound with Jack’s Mannequin. However, on the very day he finished recording the debut album, Everything in Transit, he was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia at age 22. Following a successful stem-cell transplant from his sister, he went into remission and channeled his experience into the Dear Jack Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting adolescents and young adults diagnosed with cancer. McMahon’s career continued to evolve with his solo project, Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness, which produced the gold-certified hit “Cecilia and the Satellite,” written for his daughter. His music is characterized by its piano-driven melodies and introspective, diaristic lyrics that bridge the gap between his early emo-punk roots and modern indie-pop. In 2021, he further cemented his legacy by publishing his memoir, Three Pianos, which chronicles his life’s journey through illness and musical rebirth. Today, he remains a celebrated musician and mental health advocate based in Southern California.

Career Path

2001Fronted Something Corporate through the band's rise on the Orange County pop-punk circuit, releasing 'Leaving Through the Window' and building a devoted following before his diagnosis would reshape everything.
2004Diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia at 22 the very day he finished recording Jack's Mannequin's debut album 'Everything in Transit,' channeling the experience into one of the decade's most emotionally urgent alt-rock records.
2005Returned to the stage following a successful stem-cell transplant from his sister, launching the Dear Jack Foundation to support adolescents and young adults diagnosed with cancer.
2014Launched Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness as a solo project with his self-titled debut album, anchoring his piano-driven indie-pop sound beyond the band identities that had defined him for a decade.
2015Scored a gold-certified hit with 'Cecilia and the Satellite,' a deeply personal song written for his daughter that became the defining track of his solo catalog.
2021Published the memoir 'Three Pianos' through Princeton Architectural Press, chronicling his childhood, leukemia diagnosis, stem-cell recovery, and musical rebirth in a book that became a touchstone for cancer survivors and fans alike.
2023Released the full-length album 'Tilt at the Wind No More' alongside two EPs, 'Nobody Tells You When You're Young' and 'Lying on the Hood of Your Car,' his most prolific single-year output as a solo artist.
2024Reunited all five original members of Something Corporate for the sold-out 'Out of Office Tour,' the band's first proper headline run in over two decades, with McMahon performing on a custom LED-wrapped upright piano.
2025Headlined the Jack's Mannequin 20th Anniversary 'MFEO Tour,' selling out every date including a landmark show at Red Rocks Amphitheatre before extending the run to Japan and Australia.
2026Anchors 'Three Pianos: An Evening With Something Corporate, Jack's Mannequin, and Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness,' the first concert event to unite all three of his bands on a single bill.
