Prince discovered Grammy and Emmy nominated drummer, singer and percussionist Sheila E. around 1983 and had her sing on “Erotic City,” the B-side to his number one 1984 single, “Let’s Go Crazy.” Prince also helped her secure a record contract with Warner Bros.; she released her debut album, The Glamorous Life, in 1984. Written by Prince, the title track hit the U.S. Top Ten and her second single, “The Belle of St. Mark,” charted in both the American and British Top 40. The following year, she released Romance 1600, which featured the number 11 hit “A Love Bizarre.” Sheila E. joined Prince’s band for the 1987 Sign O’ the Times tour and is featured prominently in the resulting film documentary of the same name. Four years later, she returned with her fourth album, Sex Cymbal. After her brief stint ring leading the band on Magic Johnson’s late-night show, The Magic Hour, Sheila E. returned to recording and released The Writes of Passage in fall 2000. Sheila E. has performed and/or recorded with Prince, Michael Jackson, Marvin Gaye, Diana Ross, Lionel Richie, George Duke, Gloria Estefan, Herbie Hancock, Billy Cobham, Con Funk Shun, Patti LaBelle¸ Hans Zimmer and Stevie Nicks. Her talents have also been showcased on The Latin Grammy Awards, the Summer Olympics, WOW Awards, ALMA’s, 2013 Kennedy Center Honors, The Image Awards and the 2012 Academy Awards. She released Girls Meet Boy in 2016. Shelia E. continues to tour the world.

Career Path

1984Prince secured her a record deal with Warner Bros. and co-wrote the title track of her debut album, 'The Glamorous Life,' which hit #7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped the Hot Dance Club Play chart, launching one of the decade's most distinctive pop-funk careers.
1985'A Love Bizarre,' the centerpiece of her second album 'Romance 1600' and written by Prince, reached #11 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the Billboard Dance chart, making it her highest-charting pop single.
1987Joined Prince's Sign O' the Times tour as drummer and musical director, with her work prominently featured in the resulting concert film documentary of the same name.
1991Released 'Sex Cymbal,' her fourth studio album, with the title track charting on the R&B chart, a record she wrote as a deliberate commentary on the media's 'sex symbol' framing of female artists.
2000Returned to recording with 'The Writes of Passage,' re-establishing her as an active solo voice after several years spent as musical director for Magic Johnson's late-night television show, 'The Magic Hour.'
2016Released 'Girls Meet Boy' and led the musical tribute to Prince at the BET Awards alongside the New Power Generation, honoring the collaborator who launched her career.
2021Received the Latin Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award jointly with her father, percussionist Pete Escovedo, honored at the 22nd Annual Latin Grammy Week ceremony in Las Vegas.
2023Became the first female solo percussionist to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, recognizing a career that spans drumming, singing, songwriting, and producing across pop, funk, and Latin music.
2024Released 'Bailar,' her tenth studio album, co-produced with Grammy winner Tony Succar and featuring Gloria Estefan, Rubén Blades, Gilberto Santa Rosa, and Luis Enrique, rooted in her Oakland-to-Miami Latin music heritage.
2025Won the Grammy Award for Best Global Music Performance for 'Bemba Colorá' (featuring Gloria Estefan and Mimy Succar) at the 67th Annual Grammy Awards, adding to a career that spans nominations across Grammy, Emmy, and Latin Grammy stages.
