BIOGRAPHy

Alive and kicking! Simple Minds are a Scottish rock band formed in 1977. They achieved their first taste of commercial success in the early 1980s and, despite various personnel changes, have continued to record and tour. The band scored a string of hit singles and are perhaps best known for their 1985 hit, “Don’t You (Forget About Me),” from the soundtrack of the John Hughes film The Breakfast Club. Their other hits include “Alive and Kicking” and “Belfast Child.” In 1986, the band was nominated for the Brit Award for Best British Group. The band have had five UK number one albums and have reportedly sold more than 60 million albums worldwide. The core of the band is the two remaining founding members – Jim Kerr (vocals, songwriting) and Charlie Burchill (guitars, keyboards after 1990, other instruments, songwriting) – and drummer Mel Gaynor. who first joined the band in 1982. The other current band members are Andy Gillespie (keyboards) and Ged Grimes (bass guitar). In October 2012, Simple Minds announced a tour. They released Big Music in 2014. Simple Minds continues to tour the globe.

Career Path

1982Drummer Mel Gaynor joined the Glasgow-formed band, solidifying the core lineup that would drive the band's commercial breakthrough alongside founding members Jim Kerr and Charlie Burchill.
1985'Don't You (Forget About Me),' recorded for John Hughes' film 'The Breakfast Club,' hit No. 1 in the United States and became the band's signature song.
1986Nominated for the Brit Award for Best British Group, reflecting their ascent as one of the UK's defining rock acts of the decade.
1989'Street Fighting Years' became the band's fourth consecutive UK No. 1 album, a chart run unmatched by any of their post-punk peers.
2018'Walk Between Worlds,' their 18th studio album, debuted in the UK Top 5, showing that Kerr and Burchill could still command serious chart attention 40 years after forming in Glasgow.
2022Released 'Direction of the Heart,' their 19th studio album, recorded at Chameleon Studios in Hamburg with material written and demoed in Sicily; the record debuted at No. 4 on the UK Albums Chart.
2022Collaborated with Russell Mael of Sparks on the 'Direction of the Heart' single 'Traffic,' adding a high-profile art-pop pairing to the album's promotional cycle.
2024Completed the Global Tour 2024 with Del Amitri as support, playing their greatest hits catalog to audiences across multiple continents.
2025Headlined the 'Alive and Kicking Tour' across North America with Soft Cell and Modern English as support, hitting arenas from Los Angeles and Toronto to Atlanta and Chicago.
2026Launched an extended run of US concert dates continuing the Alive and Kicking touring campaign, with the band hinting at a new creative era beyond the legacy catalog.
