BIOGRAPHy

Folk-rock duo Tegan and Sara first burst onto the Canadian music scene in 1998, when they earned the highest score in history at Calgary’s “Garage Warz” competition; their quick rise didn’t stop. Their melodic acoustics and charming stage personas led to a slew of dates with Sarah McLachlan’s Lilith Fair and a record deal with Neil Young’s Vapor Records in April 2000. Two years later, Tegan and Sara released If It Was You, and So Jealous hit shelves in 2004. In 2007, they came out with the Christopher Walla (of Death Cab)-produced The Con. Working with Walla went well, and the duo utilized his production skills on their next album as well. Sainthood was released in October of 2009. A live CD/DVD combination package titled Get Along was released on November 15 and contained three films: “States,” “India” and “For The Most Part.” Get Along was nominated for a Grammy for “Best Long Form Music Video.” Tegan and Sara released Heartthrob in 2013. They followed with Love You to Death in 2016. Tegan and Sara continue to tour the world.

Career Path

1998Earned the highest score in Calgary's 'Garage Warz' competition, a regional contest win that launched the twin duo from Alberta onto the Canadian touring circuit.
2000Secured a record deal with Neil Young's Vapor Records and supported Sarah McLachlan's Lilith Fair, giving the acoustic folk-rock duo their first major-platform exposure.
2004'Walking with a Ghost,' the lead single from 'So Jealous,' crossed into alternative radio and MTV play, delivering their international breakthrough.
2007Recorded 'The Con' with Christopher Walla of Death Cab for Cutie producing, a critically lauded album that expanded their sound and cemented their cult following.
2009Released 'Sainthood,' again produced by Walla, alongside the live CD/DVD package 'Get Along', which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Long Form Music Video.
2013'Heartthrob' repositioned the duo as synth-pop artists, with the single 'Closer' reaching mainstream charts and introducing Tegan and Sara to a new generation of listeners.
2018Received the Governor General's Performing Arts Award, Canada's highest arts honor, recognizing both their musical achievements and their advocacy for LGBTQ equality and gender justice.
2019Published their New York Times bestselling memoir 'High School,' a coming-of-age account of growing up queer in Calgary that expanded their creative profile beyond music.
2022Released their tenth studio album 'Crybaby' on Mom+Pop Music, produced by John Congleton, while simultaneously executive producing the Amazon Freevee TV adaptation of 'High School,' co-created with Clea DuVall.
2023Launched the 'Tegan and Sara: Junior High' graphic novel illustrated by Eisner Award-winner Tillie Walden, broadening their storytelling franchise into young-reader publishing.
