The Klezmatics

BIOGRAPHy

Since their emergence more than 25 years ago, the Klezmatics have raised the bar for Eastern European Jewish music, made aesthetically, politically and musically interesting recordings, inspired future generations, created a large body of work that is enduring, and helped to change the face of contemporary Yiddish culture. Often called a “Jewish roots band,” the Klezmatics have led a popular revival of this ages-old, nearly forgotten art form. They have performed in more than 20 countries and released 10 albums to date—most recently the two-CD Live at Town Hall, recorded in their home base of New York and released in celebration of the band’s silver anniversary. On their Grammy-winning 2006 album Wonder Wheel, the Klezmatics set a dozen previously unsung Woody Guthrie lyrics to music, widening their stylistic base by largely diverging from klezmer. They have also recently served as the subject of a feature-length documentary film, The Klezmatics: On Holy Ground. The Klezmatics have collaborated with such brilliant artists as violinist Itzhak Perlman, Pulitzer prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner and Israeli vocal icon Chava Alberstein. A quarter-century after their formation, the Klezmatics remain committed to their music and to the close relationship they share with their fans.

Career Path

1986Founded in New York City's East Village, channeling Eastern European Jewish klezmer into a politically charged, genre-bending sound that would help revive an art form on the verge of disappearing from American stages.
1991'Rhythm + Jews' announced the Klezmatics as a band willing to push klezmer into punk, jazz, and Middle Eastern territory, widening the audience for Yiddish music beyond the folk-festival circuit.
1997Collaborated with Tony Kushner, the Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, on 'A Dybbuk', a project that brought the Klezmatics into serious theater and established their credibility as artists operating across cultural boundaries.
2000Nora Lee Guthrie invited the Klezmatics, introduced to her through Itzhak Perlman at Tanglewood, to set a dozen of Woody Guthrie's unrecorded lyrics to music, sparking the collaboration that became 'Wonder Wheel'.
2006'Wonder Wheel' won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary World Music Album at the 49th Grammy Awards, earning the Klezmatics a place as the only Grammy-winning klezmer band in history.
2011Celebrated their silver anniversary with 'Live at Town Hall', a two-CD set recorded at their New York home base and released alongside the feature documentary 'The Klezmatics: On Holy Ground', which captured the band's 20th anniversary concert.
2016Released 'Apikorsim (Heretics)', a studio album whose title, Yiddish for 'heretics', signaled the band's continued commitment to radical, politically engaged Yiddish culture more than 30 years into their career.
2021'Letters to Afar', a score composed for Hungarian artist Péter Forgács's found-footage installation of Polish-Jewish historical films sourced from YIVO, marked the band's 13th album and most architecturally adventurous release.
2025Delivered nearly 50 concerts across North America and Europe, culminating in one of WOMEX 2025's most-attended showcases in Tampere, Finland, and a widely acclaimed US Hanukkah Tour that opened their 40th-anniversary season.
2026Released 'We Were Made For These Times' via Shamus Records, a 40th-anniversary statement featuring Sofia Rei, Joshua Nelson, the Lavender Light Gospel Choir, and Colombian percussion collective La Manga, and launched their worldwide 40th Anniversary Tour, opening at Sony Hall in New York City.
