Willie Nelson

BIOGRAPHy

Although Willie Nelson didn’t become a star until the mid-’70s, Nelson spent the ’60s releasing a series of records that earned him a small but devoted cult following. During the early ’70s, Willie aligned himself with Waylon Jennings and the burgeoning outlaw country movement, which eventually turned him into a star in 1975. Following the crossover success of that year’s Red Headed Stranger, which included the classic song “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain,” Nelson became a genuine star, as recognizable in pop circles as he was to the country audience. In addition to recording, he also launched an acting career in the early ’80s. Even as a star, Willie never played it safe musically. Instead, he borrowed from a wide variety of styles. During the ’90s and into the 2000s, Nelson remains a vital icon in country music, having greatly influenced the new country, new traditionalist, and alternative country movements of the ’80s and ’90s, as well as leaving behind a legacy of classic songs and recordings. And he’s still recording. He released the album God’s Problem Child in 2017. Willie Nelson remains a big draw at venues across the country.

Career Path

1962Debuted as a solo recording artist with '...and Then I Wrote' on Liberty Records, an album built around songs he had already written for other artists, including 'Crazy', which became one of the most-recorded songs in country history after Patsy Cline cut it.
1973'Shotgun Willie' on Atlantic Records broke Nelson from Nashville's country-pop machine, aligning him with Waylon Jennings and the outlaw movement that would remake country radio within two years.
1975'Red Headed Stranger' on Columbia went platinum, put 'Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain' at No. 1, and crossed Nelson into pop markets, making him a recognizable star well outside country radio.
1978'Stardust' spent ten weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard country chart and sold over five million copies, a pop-standards album that proved Nelson's phrasing transcended genre.
1982'Always on My Mind' took the title track to No. 1 on both the country and adult-contemporary charts, won three Grammys including Song of the Year, and stood as his best-selling studio album for a generation.
1989Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at 90, accepting in person and performing 'Whiskey River' with Chris Stapleton, 'Crazy' with fellow inductee Sheryl Crow, and closing with an all-star 'On the Road Again' alongside Stapleton, Crow, and Dave Matthews.
2017Released 'God's Problem Child' at 84, debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard Country Albums chart, the most recent proof at the time of what the bio states plainly: he is still recording.
2022Released 'A Beautiful Time' on his 89th birthday, featuring covers of the Beatles and a Chris Stapleton co-write; the album won the Grammy Award for Best Country Album at the following year's ceremony.
2025Released 'Workin' Man: Willie Sings Merle', a tribute to his lifelong friend Merle Haggard featuring eleven Haggard classics recorded at Pedernales Studios, arriving as his 78th solo studio album.
